Frederick Anthony Owen Tony Gaze, DFC & Two Bars, OAM was an Australian fighter pilot and racing driver. He flew with the Royal Air Force during WWII and became an ace credited with 12.5 confirmed victories (11 and 3 shared).
Flying Spitfire Mk.XIV DW-F of No. 610 Squadron RAF (not included in this sheet), Gaze claimed an Me 262 near Emmrich on Rhine on 14 February 1945 (a Me 262A-2 of I./KG 51 flown by Rudolf Hoffmann). In doing so, he became the first Australian to shoot down a jet fighter. Gaze also shared in the destruction of an Arado Ar 234 jet bomber on 12 April 1945. He was also the first Australian to fly a jet fighter on operations when the flew a Gloster Meteor III with 616 Squadron RAF in 1945.
Post war, Gaze became a successful racing car driver career in the UK, Europe and Australia. He was the first ever Australian to take part in a Formula One Grand Prix.
