Why the CM4008016?

Raspberry Pi’s Compute Module range packs the CM4’s processor, memory, flash and power circuitry onto a single module for designers who want the Raspberry Pi software stack inside their own hardware. The 8GB / 16GB / no-wireless variant is the pick for memory-hungry applications that live on a wired network.

1
8GB LPDDR4 RAM
Memory

8GB LPDDR4-3200 RAM

The largest memory option available on Compute Module 4. High-capacity memory for demanding applications: multi-service edge gateways, in-memory databases, machine-vision pipelines, digital signage with heavy web content, and container hosts running several workloads at once.

  • 8GB LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM (top of the 1 / 2 / 4 / 8GB range)
  • Same memory subsystem as the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 8GB
  • Headroom for 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, Ubuntu Server, Docker and virtualised services

Broadcom BCM2711 processor
Processor

Broadcom BCM2711 -- Quad-Core 64-bit Cortex-A72 @ 1.5GHz

Raspberry Pi 4-class performance in module form. The same ARM v8 SoC found in the Pi 4 Model B, with VideoCore VI graphics, hardware H.265 4Kp60 decode and H.264 1080p30 encode.

  • 4× ARM Cortex-A72 cores, 64-bit, 1.5GHz
  • VideoCore VI GPU -- OpenGL ES 3.0
  • H.265 (HEVC) decode up to 4Kp60; H.264 decode up to 1080p60, encode 1080p30
  • Dual HDMI 2.0 -- 4Kp60 on a single display, or 4Kp30 on each of two displays
3
Onboard eMMC no SD card required
Storage

16GB Onboard eMMC -- No SD Card Required

The operating system runs directly from soldered-down eMMC flash. No microSD slot to fail, wear out or work loose -- the reliability step that makes CM4 suitable for unattended, always-on and vibration-prone installations.

  • 16GB eMMC flash, peak bandwidth 100MB/s (4× faster than previous Compute Modules)
  • Flashed via USB using rpiboot from a carrier board with a USB slave / programming port (e.g. the official Compute Module 4 IO Board)
  • Non-Lite module: the SDIO / SD-card pins are not exposed on this variant
4
28 GPIO connections
Connectivity

28 GPIO Connections + PCIe, Ethernet, Camera & Display

Every interface is brought out through two 100-pin high-density board-to-board connectors, giving carrier-board designers more I/O than any standard Raspberry Pi.

  • 28× GPIO (1.8V or 3.3V signalling) -- up to 5× UART, 5× I2C, 5× SPI, SDIO, DPI, PCM, 2× PWM
  • 1× PCIe Gen 2 x1 host (5Gbps) -- NVMe, USB 3 controllers, network cards, custom hardware
  • Gigabit Ethernet PHY (Broadcom BCM54210PE) with IEEE 1588 precision timing

Carrier board required - compute module only
Please Read

Carrier Board Required -- Not a Standalone Computer

The Compute Module has no sockets, no ports and no power connector of its own. To use it you need a compatible carrier / IO board (sold separately) that mates with the two 100-pin connectors and provides the physical Ethernet jack, HDMI, USB, power input and GPIO header.

  • Works with the official Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 IO Board and the wide range of third-party CM4 carriers (NAS boards, router boards, kiosk / signage carriers, mini-ITX and industrial designs)
  • No Wi-Fi and no Bluetooth on this variant -- networking is wired Gigabit Ethernet via the carrier board
  • Not compatible with Compute Module 3 / 3+ SODIMM carriers, and not compatible with Compute Module 5 carriers ⚠

No Wi-Fi / No Bluetooth

Wired-only variant for secure networks, EMC-sensitive enclosures and installations where radio is not permitted. Nothing to disable, nothing to certify.

Standard Pi 4 Software

Runs Raspberry Pi OS (32 / 64-bit), Ubuntu, and the full Pi 4 software ecosystem. Same BCM2711 GPIO numbering as the 40-pin header.

Long-Term Availability

Compute Module 4 is a production-grade platform designed for multi-year product lifecycles, not a hobbyist-only board.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I plug this into a monitor and keyboard and use it like a Raspberry Pi 4?

No. The module has no ports. It must be mounted on a carrier / IO board, which provides HDMI, USB, Ethernet and power. With a carrier fitted it behaves just like a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B.

How do I install the operating system?

The 16GB eMMC is flashed over USB using Raspberry Pi’s rpiboot tool from a carrier board with a programming / USB slave port (the official IO Board has one). There is no microSD slot on this non-Lite module.

Does it have Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?

No. CM4008016 is the wireless-free variant. If you need on-board Wi-Fi / Bluetooth choose a CM41xxxxx part instead.

Can I get 4K on two screens?

Yes -- with both HDMI outputs in use each runs up to 4Kp30. A single display can run up to 4Kp60. Your carrier board must break out both HDMI ports.

Does it work with the Raspberry Pi 5 / Compute Module 5 IO Board?

No. CM4 and CM5 carriers are not interchangeable. Use a Compute Module 4 carrier only.

Is a heatsink needed?

Under sustained load the BCM2711 will throttle above 85°C. For enclosed or high-ambient installs a heatsink or thermal pad to the enclosure is recommended. None is supplied.

Will it run 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS and Docker?

Yes. With 8GB RAM this is the ideal CM4 variant for 64-bit operating systems and container workloads.
