Motif (subject of the painting): Southern Barbarian Folding Screen (Map of the Arrival of Southern Barbarian Ships)
A traditional composition depicting the Nanban trade from the latter half of the 16th century to the first half of the 17th century (Azuchi-Momoyama to early Edo period). The captain boarding the black ship (the Portuguese vessel), the foreign crew members, and the exotic costumes, as well as the small boat and the pines on the land, are vividly depicted.
Seal and stamp (lower left): “Genpō”
In the lower left, the seal and red stamp of “Genpō” are affixed.
Condition/Specification:
A compact small folding screen of four folds with a gold background, one piece in size (height 92 cm × width 167 cm).
The reverse side is decorated with high-status phoenix and arabesque-patterned backing paper, styled to resemble gold and silver foil.
It is painted using colors such as gold-brown, ultramarine, vermilion, and malachite.
