Early handmade homing pigeon carrier or transport cage, likely dating from the early to mid-20th century.

The carrier is constructed from wood with wire mesh ventilation and an aged leather carrying strap across the top. A removable wooden panel on the back slides upward for access to the interior.

This type of cage was used to transport homing or racing pigeons and was often homemade by pigeon keepers rather than commercially manufactured.

The cage has a wonderful primitive, utilitarian look with naturally aged wood, old hardware and well-worn materials. A handwritten note that came with the piece identifies it as an “early homemade homing pigeon carrier or critter cage,” and the note is included.

Good antique condition with heavy age-related wear throughout. The wood has scratches, staining, surface wear and old nail holes. The wire mesh has oxidation, bends and some loose or frayed areas. The leather carrying strap is dry and worn from age. The rear wooden access panel slides out and is still present. The cage remains displayable and has a strong primitive handmade appearance.

A fascinating piece of pigeon racing, homing pigeon, rural sporting and folk history that would also make a great primitive display piece.
