Here we have a lovely Edwardian Sterling Silver Jewellery Box. The box is oval and stands on four tripod wirework feet. The lid has engine turned stripes around a blank central cartouche and a scalloped wirework rim. The interior of the lid is gilded and the box is lined with pale green satin and velvet.
The jewellery box was made in Birmingham by silversmith William Aitken and dates to 1907. William Aitken founded his firm in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter in the late 1880s. He produced a wide range of silverware for both domestic and personal use and had pieces assayed in Birmingham and Chester. He remained in business into the early 1920s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after nearly 120 years of good service. The box rocks very slightly on a hard surface. The hinge is in good working order and the lid opens and shuts securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box is 8.9cm / 3.5ins wide, 6.8cm / 2.7ins deep and stands 3.8cm / 1.5ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 105.6g / 3.72oz.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter h for 1907 and the W.A makers' mark for William Aitken.
