Pickands Mather & Co. was one of the largest iron ore mining companies in the United States. Founded in 1883, they operated extensively across the iron ranges of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The Penn Mine was a productive underground iron mine complex in Norway (Dickinson County) on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Pickands Mather & Co. took over management of the Penn Iron Mining Company assets around 1923, operating them on behalf of Bethlehem Steel until the mid-1940s.
