This volume is a complete, full-color facsimile of Volume 3 of the Sanborn fire insurance map survey of Cleveland, Ohio, issued in 1887 — the concluding volume of the three-volume 1886–1887 survey of the city. It reproduces all thirty-six double-page plates (numbered 81–116), together with the original street and specials index and the volume key map, from the master scans in the Library of Congress Sanborn Maps Collection.

Where Volumes 1 and 2 covered the downtown core and the near East and West Sides, Volume 3 maps outer Cleveland: the Broadway corridor running southeast through Newburgh, the East Side avenues — Woodland, Scovill, Cedar, Kinsman, and Euclid Avenue — the village of Glenville on the lakeshore, and Brooklyn on the west side.

This is also the Standard Oil volume. In 1887 Cleveland was the refining capital of the company John D. Rockefeller had founded there seventeen years earlier, and its facilities spread across seven of these plates: Works No. 1 fills plates 96 through 98, with the filling and tank yards, storage tanks, and the Clark Oil Works mapped nearby — each still house, tank, and cooper shop drawn at lot level. Around them the plates record the Cleveland Rolling Mill Co., the Cleveland Axle Co., the State Insane Asylum, the Jewish Orphan Asylum, and breweries such as Schmidt & Hoffmann, all named in the original index reproduced here.
