Agarwood (Oud) is the English name for 奇楠沉香 (Qi Nam Chén Xiāng), an exceptionally rare and precious softwood native to China that was historically reserved exclusively for Chinese royalty.
Agarwood is formed in the heartwood of Aquilaria trees native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia. In nature, healthy heartwood is pale, odorless, and light. When the tree is compromised by injury, lightning, or a specific fungal infection, it activates a defense mechanism, it produces a dark, dense, and highly fragrant protective resin. This resin-embedded wood is what we call agarwood (or Oud).
It forms a rich, dark resin when the tree heals from a natural or induced injury. Highly prized for luxury perfumes, high-grade incense, and traditional oils, it is one of the most valuable natural raw materials on Earth.
This rare material has been prized across Asia and the Middle East for its deeply complex, woody, and mystical aroma. Today, it remains a pinnacle of luxury in premium perfumery, traditional incense, and cultural ceremonies.
