Putting old lenses on new, powerful DSLR or mirrorless cameras seems counterintuitive, so why would anyone want to do that? The simple answer is that many older lenses can capture images that have that elusive quality known as character. For photographers or videographers looking to create unique images that express their personal style, character can be even more important than resolution numbers, corner-to-corner sharpness, and other benefits of the near-perfect lenses that are widely available today.

The imperfections and aberrations of older lenses are the very strengths that differentiate them from modern lenses. Additionally, a fully mechanical lens is likely to take longer and be cheaper to repair than modern focus-by-wire lenses. Old lenses also allow you to change the camera system, or your mount can be retired without breaking your lenses. In extreme cases, some mirrorless lenses require firmware updates for each new body, so even if the mount remains, the lenses won't stay on the update list forever (for example, Nikon's new E-lenses are not compatible with cameras that are only two generations old).

• • B4 lenses are designed for cameras with 2/3" sensors. Strong vignetting can occur when used on full-frame or APS-C sensors. Zooming in, integrated doublers, crop mode or cropping in post-production reduce this effect.
• • This is a manual adapter: electronic functions such as autofocus, AE metering or image stabilization are not transferred.
• • Some cameras require special configuration or display messages such as “Error: Lens not attached – check lens”.

• Manual adapters do not provide power to the lens; therefore autofocus is not available.
• • Set exposure manually or meter using your camera's aperture priority (stopping down) mode.
• • If your lens does not have a manual aperture control ring, the aperture will remain in its default position (either open or reset to a preset aperture position, depending on the lens).
