Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features the top of Mount Fuji painted in red and black. It is called Akafuji, literally 'red Fuji'. In the foreground, there are two cranes flying above trees and clouds. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has become part of Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used in the tokonoma of a tatami room. Chakake features Zen words and is used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
