For sale is a beautiful vintage Japanese hand-carved yew wood mask of the renowned Noh character "Otafuku" (also known as Okame), the traditional goddess of mirth and good fortune.  The mask bears the artist's signature carving on the back but we are unable to read the calligraphy.  The back retains sharp, masterful chisel marks unique to the Ittobori technique.

This piece is a masterful example of "Ichii Ittobori", a renowned traditional woodcarving craft from the Hida Takayama region of Japan.  It is carved from high-quality Ichii (Japanese Yew) wood.  It is celebrated for its spectacular natural grain patterns and the beautiful contrast between its heartwood and sapwood.

The mask is in good vintage pre-owned condition.  The yew wood has aged beautifully, developing a rich color and luster over time.  There are small scuffs, light signs of age and perhaps a minor mark(s), nick(s), etc. but no major cracks or structural damage.  Please carefully review all of the high-resolution photographs to confirm the overall condition and the quality of the woodwork, design, size, etc.

The hand carved signed yew wood Otafuku (Okame) mask is approx. 20cm (7 7/8") high, 15cm (5 7/8") wide and weighs 450 grams.
