How do I know if I have a bad wheel hub assembly:
A failing wheel hub assembly can present a variety of symptoms including:
1. The steering wheel may shake while driving.
2. Growling, humming, squeaking, chirping or squealing from the tires when driving at 30-45mph.
3. ABS light will come on if the sensor isn’t reading properly or if the signal is lost.
How to check the wheel hub assembly on the vehicle:
1. Lift the vehicle.
2. While the wheel is still on the vehicle, hold the 12:00 position with one hand and the 6:00 position with the other.
3. Shake the wheel vigorously to see if there is any gap.
Note: Keep in mind that in the early stages of hub bearing failure, there may not be any gap.
4. If you find any gaps:
①Remove tire and wheel.
②Remove one slide pin and tilt the caliper. This prevents the brake pads from dragging on the rotor. If it is more convenient, you can remove the caliper.
③Rotate the wheel hub by hand. Look for any unusual resistance or vibration. If you're not sure what to look at, try this for all hubs on your vehicle. Look for any differences between hubs.
