When he was dead, they came boldly to give suitable burial to the body. They could not think of allowing it to be burned with the bodies of criminals and the offal of the city, in the Valley of Hinnom. Unconsciously, or perhaps consciously, they were fulfilling the prophecy which said that the messiah should be with the rich in his death. These two men, having obtained an order from Pilate, are here seen, each on a ladder that leans against the cross, taking down the body. The Virgin and the Magdalene have fallen upon their knees. Other women and John have remained last at the cross. Centurion, soldiers, priests, and multitude have gone. Only these truly devoted friends remain. In His glory Jesus remembers the time when he was dead, and remembers those whose love failed not even then.
