ANTIQUE FRENCH MINIATURE HAND PAINTED YOUNG MAN PORTRAIT

Dear collectors, Noblesse-Collection is pleased to propose you this Important French portrait 
miniature of a gentleman, signed “Mme Gastal” and dated 1824, by Marguerite Gastal-Laëderich, 
a distinguished French miniature painter active mainly during the Restoration period, between 
approximately 1814 and 1830.

The portrait depicts an elegant young gentleman shown half-length, wearing a dark formal coat over 
a finely rendered white shirt and high cravat. The sitter is portrayed with great refinement, particularly 
in the delicate modelling of the face, expressive eyes, hair and subtle flesh tones. The restrained 
brown-grey background further emphasizes the figure and gives the composition the elegant sobriety 
characteristic of French Restoration portraiture.

The miniature is clearly signed in red “Mme Gastal” at lower left and dated 1824, providing both 
a firm attribution and an exact date for the work.

Marguerite Gastal-Laëderich was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin (1759–1832), one 
of the most celebrated French miniature painters of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Her work 
belongs to the highly refined tradition of French miniature portraiture developed around Augustin and 
his circle.
She became particularly accomplished in the use of gouache and watercolor on finely prepared 
portrait supports, employing the meticulous technique required for miniature painting.

Gastal-Laëderich was not only a practicing artist but also a theorist and teacher of miniature 
painting. In 1828–1829 she published in Paris an important instructional work entitled 
Principes de la miniature, méthode pour les personnes qui veulent peindre seules, devoted to the 
principles and practical techniques of miniature painting.

Her known works include portraits of members of the French aristocracy and royal family. 
Among the works associated with her are portraits of King Louis XVIII and Marie-Thérèse of France, 
Duchess of Angoulême, dating from around 1816–1817. Portraits by Gastal-Laëderich, including 
representations of distinguished gentlemen and ladies of the Restoration period, have appeared on 
the international art market and in major auction houses.

This 1824 portrait therefore belongs to the artist's principal period of activity and provides a particularly 
representative example of the sophisticated French miniature portraiture produced during the Restoration.
