This album portrays a cash crop farmer ("In My Next Life"), a chicken farmer ("Set My Chickens Free"), an opening act musician ("Troubador") and even a househusband ("Chores"). It's not just that he takes working folks as his subject matter; he also reflects their philosophy that nothing--neither love nor money--comes easy. And on "I Am an Island," the singer responds to heartache with a reserved dignity which only implies the pain he's hiding, but which makes that pain seem far more real than the hurt blurted out by a blubbering fool.
