The ship is one of a group of about 150 honoring WW II Ships named for famous Americans. She was launched on May 12, 1942 in Houston, Texas. She transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces during WW II, survived the war and was scrapped in 1966.

General Winfield Scott, USA was a senior US Army officer from 1841 until the Civil War when he was sidelined. However, his plan to divide the South was the option that was used to win the war. He died in 1866.
