Writeup![]() | Writeup from MB 113: Northwest Africa 16818 (NWA 16818) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite) History: Purchased by Sean Tutorow in Morocco in December 2021. Physical characteristics: A single, light colored individual lacking fusion crust. Saw cut reveals a fragmental breccia with clasts and crystal fragments of varying size and color, set in a light tan groundmass. Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) This meteorite is a polymict fragmental breccia with diogenite, cumulate eucrite, and basaltic eucrite clasts. Clasts are up to several mm in size set in a very fine-grain cataclastic groundmass. Plagioclase makes up approximately 20% of modal mineralogy of this meteorite. Minor phases observed were chromite, ilmenite, troilite, silica and low-Ni Fe metal. The percentage of diogenite material is ~60 vol%, the percentage of eucrite material is ~40 vol%. Geochemistry: (M. Spilde and C. Agee, UNM) Diogenitic low Ca-pyroxene Fs23.4±2.7Wo2.4±0.9, Fe/Mn=28±2, n=4; cumulate eucrite low Ca-pyroxene Fs34.7±0.2Wo4.1±1.5, Fe/Mn=28±1, n=2; basaltic eucrite low-Ca pyroxene Fs59.5Wo5.2, Fe/Mn=32, n=1; plagioclase An91.3±3.2Ab8.3±3.0, n=4. Classification: HED achondrite (Howardite). Specimens: 22.4 g on deposit at UNM, Sean Tutorow holds the main mass. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
