A late Georgian surveyors beam level marked 'Webster's B Level / G. Cox, 128 Holborn Hill, London'. The wooden level with brass ends : one with two circular apertures fitted with wire crosshairs and a pinhole sight, the other end with a single circular aperture with wire crosshair & pinhole sight. The top has a brass mounted inset bubble level, and one side has a manual elevation sight arm with locking thumbscrew, the end with a scale calibrated 'Inches in the Yard, Rise / Fall' with a pinhole sight between the two engraved arrows. The brass base with a threaded hole for mounting. Pine storage box (probably not original), c.1830
From what I could find out, George Cox worked from 128 Holborn Hill during circa 1830- 1836, and the only other 'Webster' beam level I could find was marked 'Webster's Improved Beam Level' and had a rack & pinion elevation sight arm, so the level offered is presumably an earlier version.

Condition : The level in good used original antique condition with no damage, unpolished with tarnish to the brasswork throughout, and expected light marks / wear commensurate with age and use. The wire crosshairs are slightly bowed and at least 2 wires have been repaced at some point, the bottom r/h screw on the brass bubble level plate appears to be an old replacement, and the white background under the bubble level has a small area of wear at one end (last photo). The later ? pine box is structurally sound but cosmetically poor and with the interior lid having two gouges to accommodate the level - please see all 24 photos below (message me if you require additional photos / info, etc).
