Rolex Genève – 14ct Gold Gentleman’s Wristwatch, hallmarked for London and dating to 1974. Presented with its original retailer’s presentation box and Northern Goldsmiths guarantee certificate dated 30 June 1980, together with additional Northern Goldsmiths paperwork relating specifically to the watch.

A particularly attractive vintage Rolex, further enhanced by its excellent original provenance and accompanying period documentation. The later date of sale is entirely consistent with the period, when luxury watches could remain in authorised dealers’ stock for several years before being retailed. The 1980 guarantee therefore records the date of sale, rather than the date of manufacture, with the London hallmarks confirming the watch’s earlier production period. This piece exudes vintage elegance. It features a Rolex-signed dial, well preserved and retaining its timeless charm. Powered by the Rolex calibre 1600 – a robust 17-jewel manual - wind movement – this watch also retains its original Rolex-signed crown and original Rolex signed buckle. Serviced by a Rolex specialist watchmaker, it is in excellent mechanical order, keeping precise time. Ready to enjoy immediately!

A particularly attractive and wonderfully preserved gentleman’s Rolex wristwatch, presented in a substantial 14 carat yellow-gold tonneau-shaped case. The elegant champagne sunburst sigma dial is beautifully understated, featuring applied solid gold baton hour markers, the applied Rolex coronet at 12 o’clock and the classic ROLEX / GENÈVE signature beneath. Slender black and gold hands provide an attractive contrast against the warm dial, while the simple two-hand configuration gives the watch a particularly clean and refined appearance.

The distinctive 1970s/early-1980s tonneau-form 14ct gold case has an elegant brushed finish with polished accents and remains extremely handsome on the wrist. It is complemented by a rich brown alligator -pattern leather strap. Please note that the watch case measures 30mm wide × 35mm in height, making it considerably smaller than modern gentlemen’s Rolex wristwatches. Rolex dress watches produced during this era were typically designed with smaller, slimmer and more refined proportions, reflecting the prevailing style and fashion of the period.

Of particular importance is the watch’s exceptional accompanying provenance. It retains its original presentation box and original guarantee certificate dated 30 June 1980, issued by the renowned Northern Goldsmiths of Newcastle upon Tyne, an official Rolex retailer with one of the longest associations with Rolex in Britain.

Northern Goldsmiths’ relationship with Rolex is historically significant: the Newcastle showroom became one of Rolex’s first appointed British stockists in 1919, beginning an association which has now lasted for more than a century. The famous Northern Goldsmiths premises on Blackett Street remains an Official Rolex Retailer and Service Centre today. (Goldsmiths)

The survival of the original dealer-issued and dated guarantee certificate together with the presentation box considerably enhances the collectability and historical interest of this vintage Rolex, providing an unusually strong record of its original retail sale.

Additional Information;

Founded in 1905 in England by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf & Davis, the partnership became known as the Rolex Watch Company in 1915, moving to its new Geneva headquarters in 1919. The success of the wristwatch can be largely attributed to many of Rolex’s innovations which made the company one of the most respected and well-known of all luxury brands. These have included its famous “Oyster” case — the world’s first water-resistant and dustproof watch case, invented in 1926 — and its “Perpetual” — the world’s first reliable, self-winding movement for the wristwatch, launched in 1933. These would form the foundation for Rolex’s Datejust and Day-Date, respectively introduced in 1945 and 1956. Also and equally importantly, Rolex is known for its sports watches, such as the Explorer, Submariner and GMT-Master launched in the mid-1950s.
