The atmospheric composition shows the castle beside the water, with figures and boats in the foreground, distant mountains and dramatic cloud formations beyond. The painting is signed and dated lower centre, appearing to read “G. W. Pettitt, June 1848”.

The reverse bears handwritten annotations and title, including “Conway Castle”, together with further artist and address details.

Presented in an impressive gilt frame with an ornate decorative border and shaped gold-coloured mount.

Condition

The painting is antique and shows signs of age, including craquelure, surface wear, areas of paint loss and historic restoration. The canvas has been relined. The ornate frame displays age-related wear, marks, losses and rubbing to the finish. The backing boards and hanging fittings are also aged.
