This original 1924 first-edition Union Pacific System travel booklet, titled "The Pacific Northwest and Alaska," is in crisp, flat vintage condition with bright gold-embossed textured green wrappers and exceptionally clean, unmarked interior pages containing fully intact rear transit maps. This historic 48-page piece features stunning, full-page black-and-white landscape photography by renowned Northwest photographers Asahel Curtis and Benjamin A. Gifford. Union Pacific Railroad Company, is not a traditional narrative novel but rather an influential, vintage promotional travel guide and piece of "railroadiana" literature first issued in the mid 1920's. Designed to stimulate passenger interest in the American West during the golden age of rail travel, the roughly 40-to-48-page booklet operates as a literary and visual itinerary through the raw, natural wonders of the American Northwest and the territory of Alaska. The text serves as an immersive tour guide, detailing the histories of local towns, regional geography, and specific landmarks accessible via the Union Pacific lines—such as the Columbia-River gorge, Sun Valley, Mt. Rainier, and Puget Sound. Richly illustrated with descriptive maps and scenic photographs, the book documents how modern transportation integrated remote, wild frontiers into the broader American cultural fabric, aiming to convince 20th-century vacationers that the rugged wilderness could be comfortably explored through the railroad's network.
