Acer palmatum 'Okken's Red Mini'

Rare Miniature Red Dwarf Japanese Maple

Zones 5-9

Acer palmatum ‘Okken’s Red Mini’ is an exceptionally rare and highly desirable miniature red Japanese maple prized for its incredibly compact growth habit and outstanding seasonal color. This remarkable dwarf selection emerges in spring with brilliant bright red foliage that gradually matures to rich, deep maroon tones. Throughout the summer, vibrant red new growth continues to appear, creating a stunning contrast against the darker, mature leaves and providing exceptional color interest all season long. In fall, ‘Okken’s Red Mini’ puts on a spectacular display as its foliage transforms into an even more intense shade of brilliant red. With an extremely slow growth rate, this miniature Japanese maple is perfect for gardeners seeking a truly compact specimen. The original plant belonging to our friend Jody Karlin has reached only 2–3 feet in height and width after 18 years, demonstrating its exceptionally dwarf nature. This special cultivar has a fascinating history, having been passed along to Jody Karlin by George Okken many years ago before making its way into the MrMaple collection. Ideal for conifer troughs, miniature landscapes, rock gardens, containers, and small garden spaces, ‘Okken’s Red Mini’ offers incredible ornamental appeal without requiring much room. Some direct sunlight to full sun is recommended to encourage its richest red coloration, while plants grown in more shade may develop darker green foliage accented by brilliant red new growth. For collectors of rare dwarf Japanese maples, ‘Okken’s Red Mini’ is a true miniature treasure that combines exceptional color, an incredibly compact habit, and a unique history.
