"The British pub has always been more than somewhere to have a pint. It's a stage, a refuge, a debating chamber and, occasionally, a battlefield.
These loose ink and watercolour sketches capture fleeting moments of conversation, disagreement, laughter and quiet reflection between ordinary people. I'm less interested in producing perfect likenesses than in recording the energy between people—the raised eyebrow, the animated gesture, the awkward silence after an argument, or the familiar comfort of old friends putting the world to rights.
Working quickly with ink and watercolour allows the paintings to remain spontaneous and honest. The unpredictable nature of the medium mirrors the conversations themselves: lively, imperfect and constantly shifting. Marks are left visible, washes run where they choose, and details emerge rather than being overworked.
Most of the figures are anonymous (although some are quite clearly very real!) because they could belong to almost any British pub. They are inspired by fragments of overheard conversations, memories, observations and the rich social theatre found in these increasingly rare communal spaces.
At a time when many traditional pubs are disappearing, these paintings celebrate them as places where stories are shared, friendships are forged, disagreements are settled—or sometimes started—and everyday life quietly unfolds.
Rather than documenting a specific place or person, these works aim to capture something more familiar: the humour, warmth, tension and humanity that exist wherever people gather over a pint and conversation.

Industrial landscapes rendered as memory, not record — the labor and the release, painted in feeling rather than fact.
