Mushrooms have been called the flowers of the forest for their beauty and their fleeting nature. This book gathers about 300 fungi illustrations drawn mainly between the 18th and 20th centuries. They are valuable as scientific records and just as rewarding to look at as works of art.

Most of the plates come from rare European mycological works. You will page through 18th-century studies of the fungi around Rimini and Regensburg, a 1729 work on new plant genera, and the French flora of 1791 to 1809. There are also Italian plates comparing common edible mushrooms with the poisonous species they are easily mistaken for, and 19th-century French surveys of edible and toxic mushrooms.

The collection also turns to Japan. It includes the fungi section of the Edo-period Honzo Zufu, reproduced from a 1921 facsimile edition. The Baien Kinpu of 1836 and a mushroom study from 1850 appear alongside it, so you can see how artists in Japan and in Europe recorded the same subject in very different ways.

All of this fits into a compact, palm-sized volume of 288 pages, made for both reading and display. Published by PIE International, 2026 publication.
