Historical Background:

During the Soviet period, New Year was one of the most important celebrations for children.

Schools, kindergartens and cultural centres organised New Year parties, where children dressed as animals and fairy-tale characters.

Animal masks featuring lions, bears, rabbits, foxes and wolves were especially popular.

Similar Soviet lion masks are documented from the early 1980s, including examples produced by the Roslavl toy factory in 1983.
