Every spring, two glossy bumps appear on the head of an Ezo sika deer. Through summer they lengthen beneath soft velvet skin, and by autumn they have curved into broad, formidable antlers. This book follows that yearlong transformation on the Notsuke Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido, where wild deer live through the full severity and beauty of the four seasons.
Kohei Nagira is a working high school teacher as well as a photographer, and he watched these animals grow the way he watches his own students grow. That perspective runs quietly through the 70 photographs collected here, including the award-winning images "The Endless Battle" and "Shining Antlers." The work earned the People's Choice Award honors at the Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2025 in London and placed highly in the Nature's Best International Awards 2025 in the United States.
Alongside the photographs you will find two written pieces that ask where the boundary between people and wild animals actually lies. This is a bilingual edition, with all text appearing in both English and Japanese, so you can read every word regardless of which language you work in.
In his afterword, Nagira notes that in Hokkaido it is harder to avoid Ezo deer than to meet them. People say they are everywhere. To him, they were always something more. This 96-page volume is his first photography collection.
