This is a commemorative reproduction / non-authentic copy of the historic 48 Grote coin associated with Anthony Günther (Anton Günther), Count of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst and Lord of Jever and Kniphausen.
IMPORTANT: This is NOT an authentic 17th-century coin and it is NOT made of silver. It is being offered as a commemorative/reproduction piece based on the historic design.
The original coin type was issued during the reign of Anton Günther (1603–1667) for the Lordship of Jever in the German States. Catalog references identify the type as KM#47, with a denomination of 48 Grote = ⅔ Thaler. The genuine historical issue is listed as silver and approximately 23.25 grams.
The design is particularly attractive because it combines a detailed portrait of Anton Günther with the heraldic arms of Oldenburg-Delmenhorst and the lion associated with Jever.
Anton Günther (Anthony Günther), 1603–1667, was Count of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst and also held lordship over territories including Jever and Kniphausen.
He ruled for much of the 17th century, a period when German territories were politically fragmented and individual counts, princes and other rulers issued their own coinage.
His name and titles appear prominently on the obverse of this design:
ANTON • GUNT • CO: OLDEN • ET • DEL • DYN • IE • ET • KN
Expanded and translated, this refers to:
Anton Günther, Count of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst, Lord in Jever and Kniphausen.
The portrait shows the ruler's bust turned approximately one-quarter to the right.
The design reproduced here is based on a genuine historical 48 Grote issue of Jever dating to 1659–1660.
The denomination was equivalent to ⅔ of a Thaler. Numismatic references catalog the type as KM#47, while Davenport references include Dav. 717.
Original examples were struck in silver and are recorded at approximately 23.25 grams. Examples of the genuine 1660 issue have appeared in major European numismatic auctions, including Künker, where examples have been described as 2 Mark (48 Grote) 1660, Jever.
This makes the present piece particularly useful as a historical reproduction for collectors who appreciate the design and history of early German States coinage but want an inexpensive example for display or educational purposes.
The reverse features the crowned Oldenburg-Delmenhorst coat of arms, with the central shield displaying the Jever lion. Decorative flowers appear on either side of the arms, with the denomination below.
The Latin inscription reads:
AUXILIUM MEUM A DOMINO • 1660
which translates as:
"My help is in the Lord."
Below the design appears the denomination:
48 GROT
The combination of heraldry, religious motto and denomination is characteristic of the historical coin design being reproduced here.
Coins from the German States are especially interesting to collectors because Germany did not yet exist as a unified modern nation-state in the 17th century.
Instead, the region consisted of numerous kingdoms, duchies, counties, lordships, bishoprics and other territories, many of which maintained their own monetary systems and issued coins bearing the names, portraits and heraldic symbols of their rulers.
The Lordship of Jever was one of those territories. Jever was associated with the counts of Oldenburg, and its coinage provides an excellent example of how a ruler's political authority, territorial claims and heraldic identity were represented directly on money.
The original 48 Grote therefore represents much more than a denomination. It is a small historical record of 17th-century German political geography, dynastic authority, heraldry and monetary history.
PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY:
This item is being sold as a COMMORATIVE / REPRODUCTION PIECE and is NOT an authentic 1659–1660 coin.
IT IS NOT SILVER.
It should NOT be represented as an original 17th-century 48 Grote, and it is NOT being offered as an authentic KM#47 coin.
The KM#47 reference in this listing identifies the historic coin type that this reproduction copies.
This distinction is important because authentic examples of the original type are genuine 17th-century numismatic objects and have been offered through established auction houses.

A very interesting piece for collectors of European coin reproductions, German States numismatics, Oldenburg, Jever, Anton Günther, historical replicas, exonumia, medieval and early-modern European history, heraldry, and educational historical objects.
It can also make an interesting display piece for someone studying the development of German territorial coinage and the many different rulers and states that existed before German unification.

Again, this is NOT an authentic 1659–1660 coin and is NOT silver.
1 commemorative reproduction of the 48 Grote Anton Günther / Jever coin design.
Exactly as pictured.
This reproduction captures the remarkable design of the historic 48 Grote associated with Anton Günther and the Lordship of Jever.
With its portrait of the ruler, Oldenburg-Delmenhorst heraldry, Jever lion, Latin religious motto and 48 Grote denomination, it provides a fascinating window into the coinage and political history of the German States during the 1600s.
For complete transparency, however, this particular piece is NOT an authentic 17th-century coin and NOT silver. It is a commemorative reproduction of the historical design.
