Acer truncatum 'Super Dragon'

Rare Heat-Tolerant Golden Shantung Maple

Zones 5-9

Acer truncatum ‘Super Dragon’ is an exciting and rare selection of Shantung maple prized for its golden foliage, heat tolerance, hardiness, and vigorous growth. For gardeners looking for a colorful maple that can perform in conditions where many traditional Japanese maples may struggle, ‘Super Dragon’ is an outstanding choice.

‘Super Dragon’ was discovered, introduced, and patented by our good friend Keith Johannson. This special selection takes the toughness and adaptability that make Shantung maples so desirable and combines them with striking golden coloration for an impressive ornamental landscape tree.

Shantung maples are well known for their hardiness and relatively fast growth, making them excellent choices for a wide range of landscapes. ‘Super Dragon’ adds another dimension with its bright foliage, creating an eye-catching specimen that can provide excellent contrast against darker green, blue, or red-leaved plants.

One of the biggest advantages of Acer truncatum is its ability to handle summer heat exceptionally well. This makes ‘Super Dragon’ especially appealing to maple enthusiasts in warmer regions who want brilliant foliage color combined with the durability of a Shantung maple.

With its combination of golden foliage, heat tolerance, vigor, and rarity, Acer truncatum ‘Super Dragon’ is a fantastic collector's maple and an excellent specimen tree for the landscape.
