RARE ORIGINAL 1925–1927 GERMAN MOTORCYCLE PHOTOGRAPH
Prussian Silesia Registration “IK-12549” – Handwritten Family Inscription – Weimar Republic
Offered is an outstanding original silver gelatin photograph dating to the mid-1920s, depicting a young German motorcyclist posed proudly on his touring motorcycle bearing registration IK-12549. The reverse carries a contemporary handwritten German birthday inscription, adding personal provenance and transforming this from a simple snapshot into an authentic family keepsake from the Weimar Republic.
The motorcycle retains its original registration plate, making it possible to identify the registration prefix as belonging to the Prussian Province of Silesia (Provinz Schlesien) under the Imperial and Weimar German registration system. This places the photograph in a region that is now largely part of modern Poland, adding considerable historical interest.
Research Notes
Based on extensive comparison with period factory literature and surviving examples, the motorcycle appears to be most likely a Victoria KR III touring model manufactured circa 1925–1927. While the tank emblem is partially obscured by the rider’s leg and prevents absolute identification, numerous features correspond closely with Victoria’s KR III series:
* Cylindrical fuel tank with polished retaining straps
* Large circular tank medallion
* Early girder-style front fork
* Touring frame geometry
* Single-cylinder engine
* Large period headlamp
* Mid-1920s touring configuration
Victoria introduced the KR III in 1924 and continued development through the middle of the decade, making it one of Germany’s premier sporting and touring motorcycles of the era.
Inscription (Reverse)
Handwritten in German:
“Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstage.
Dein Onkel Wilhelm.”
Translation:
“Heartfelt congratulations on your birthday.
Your Uncle Wilhelm.”
This period inscription establishes the photograph as an original family gift rather than a commercial postcard.
