A superb and highly unusual early 20th century bank of four counter drawers constructed using original Fry’s Chocolate wooden boxes.
The piece has clearly been made as a functional shop, counter or workshop chest, with four original Fry’s wooden chocolate boxes used as the drawer bodies. When removed from the cabinet, each drawer reveals original black printed Fry’s Chocolate advertising, including the wonderful flowing Fry’s script and examples marked: “Fry’s Chocolate – Manufactured in England.” The boxes have been fitted with matching dark stained wooden drawer fronts and decorative brass drop handles before being housed within a purpose-made wooden carcass with moulded top and plinth.
A fantastic example of period reuse and shop-made furniture, dating from around the early 1900s
The real charm of this piece is that the advertising remains largely hidden when the drawers are closed, only revealing itself when they are removed or opened.
It retains a wonderful untouched appearance with scratches, knocks, rubbing, colour variation and general wear throughout, all consistent with its age and working life. I have deliberately left the original finish and character intact rather than over-restoring it.
All four drawers operate and the original Fry’s branding remains strong and clearly visible.
Approximate dimensions: 41cm wide 30cm high 20cm deep
A really unusual piece of British confectionery advertising history, and equally appealing as a decorative antique, shop display, collector’s piece or practical set of countertop drawers.
Please study all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description and show the condition, construction and Fry’s branding in detail.
