Cebu, Mactan Island Philippines
A large specimen of Mitra papalis, the well known Papal Mitre, from the Philippines. This classic mitrid is immediately recognizable by its elongated, heavy form and intricate pattern of rich chestnut-brown markings over a porcelain-white ground.
This specimen displays particularly attractive dense coloration and well defined patterning, extending from the body whorl through the stepped spire. The aperture revels the strong columellar folds of the Mitridae, an important diagnostic feature of the family.
At 115.4mm, this is a substantial example with excellent proportions and strong visual character. Mitra papalis has long been a favorite among collectors of Indo-Pacific gastropods because of its distinct look and unmistakable coloration.
This specimen has it original collection data label, preserving locality and size.
