The Destruction of Airship SL-11

During the night of September 2-3, 1916, a fleet of German airships conducted a major bombing raid over England. The German Army airship Schütte-Lanz SL-11—though technically a wooden-framed dirigible rather than an aluminum-framed Zeppelin, it was universally referred to as a "Zeppelin" by the British public and the press—was intercepted by Royal Flying Corps pilot Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson. Firing new incendiary ammunition, Robinson successfully ignited the hydrogen-filled airship, which crashed in a spectacular fireball in the village of Cuffley, Hertfordshire, killing the entire 16-man crew.

This event marked the first time a German airship was shot down over British soil, providing a massive boost to civilian morale. For his actions, Robinson was awarded the Victoria Cross. This cover serves as a striking philatelic tribute to a major milestone in early military aviation history.
