During World War I, Germany utilized rigid airships for strategic bombing campaigns against Great Britain. On the night of August 24, 1916, the Imperial German Navy Zeppelin L-31 (factory designation LZ-72), commanded by the highly experienced Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Mathy, executed a raid over London. The airship dropped a heavy payload of high-explosive and incendiary bombs on the districts of Deptford, Plumstead, and Eltham. The L-31 was eventually shot down just weeks later, on October 1, 1916, by British fighter pilot Wulstan Joseph Tempest.
