Major Uriah Macoy was an American Civil War veteran from North Bridgewater (now Brockton), Massachusetts, who served as an officer in the Union Army and later became a state legislator and local police official.
Military Service
Before his promotion to the field officer ranks, Macoy initially served as a Corporal and later as a First Sergeant in an early-war Massachusetts unit. During his deployment, he was captured by Confederate forces at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. Following his capture, he was held as a prisoner of war at the infamous Belle Isle Prison in Richmond, Virginia, until he was released in March 1864.
Upon returning to Massachusetts, he continued his service in the short-term volunteer militia organized during the later stages of the war:
- July 11, 1864: Commissioned as Captain of Company C in the 60th Massachusetts Infantry, a regiment organized for 100 days of service.
