Description
1930s German Art Deco Powder Compact Sliding Mirror Blue Black Vanity
Striking 1930s German Art Deco powder compact and vanity mirror featuring an unusual mechanical pull-out mirror design.
The rectangular compact has a bold Machine Age exterior decorated with alternating raised cobalt-blue and black geometric strips surrounded by a gold-tone metal frame. The reverse features finely patterned engine-turned decoration.
Its most distinctive feature is the large, beveled glass vanity mirror, which slides out from the lower portion of the compact. When closed, the piece measures approximately 3½ inches long; with the mirror extended, the overall length is approximately 6 inches.
A separate hinged compartment above the sliding mirror opens to reveal the powder area. Removable period fabric fittings are included as photographed.
The compact is engraved “Made in Germany.” No manufacturer's name or additional identifying mark was found.
The combination of German manufacture, geometric decoration, compact dimensions and ingenious mechanical construction is characteristic of quality Art Deco-era vanity accessories.
A particularly unusual surviving example for collectors of antique compacts, Art Deco accessories and vintage vanity items.
