Padding Preferences: Kevin Greene spent the early part of his career exclusively wearing Riddell VSR-4 helmets.
The "Schutt Air" Shell Upgrade: When he joined the Panthers later in his career, he preferred the distinctive inflatable air-bladder padding system of the Schutt Air system to manage his thick hair and offer better impact customizability.
The Riddell Bumper: Because of strict NFL team branding rules and personal endorsement details at the time, players often wore mixed gear setups. This resulted in a Schutt shell featuring standard Riddell-branded nose bumpers and chin straps, blending the features of both helmet types.
While his official gear registry and front branding say Riddell, the actual plastic shell protecting his head in this photo is a Schutt Air.
