The British in the Sudan, 1898-1956, tells the story of British rule there as expressed by both rulers and ruled through their own words in diaries, letters, memoranda, memoirs and inter views.

The unique feature of this book is that it describes what the British rulers actually did day to day as they carried out the pedestrian aspects of administration. Too often memoirs of the imperial rulers dwell on the romance of their experiences, the smell of dung fires in the morning, sending the children off to school in England, the brilliant sunsets of Africa. However, they hardly ever recorded what they did as rulers from one day to the next, in published works. Yet in their letters, diaries, memoranda and recollections their work comes vividly to light. The authors have drawn upon the words of the British in the Sudan to show how in fact they ruled. It turns out to be an exciting story, indeed more so than the tedious memoirs of hunting and game-shooting which fill so many of the published memoirs of duty in the Sudan. There is a final chapter entitled 'In the Eyes of the Ruled' in which Francis M. Deng has utilised his interviews with prominent Sudanese on their impressions of British rule to make a fascinating juxtaposition of the preceding chapters which are the words of the British Raj.
