Standing 32.5 cm tall and 11.5cm x 8cm at the base (at widest/longest points), and weighing about 850g (2lbs), this is a lovely traditional hand-carved example of an African figure grinding cereal grains with the pestle & mortar. Created from a single piece of African Blackwood it is 850gdark brown almost black with nicely carved, polished and textured surfaces, making for an attractive piece of work.
Don't know the age of this, but it is most likely vintage at a minimum, and although carvings like this can be quite resilient/hard-wearing, it is still basically wood and they are unlikely to be perfect. An example is in photo 5 where there is an imperfection across the rear shoulder/back area and a bit of a gap in the wood in middle of the skirt, if able to zoom in. Nothing that spoils the piece as a whole, particularly being at the rear.
It's a great looking, nice solid figure.
