Book Description

James M. Cain's novel 『The Postman Rings Twice』 was published in the Minumsa World Literature Collection (No. 169). This work, Kane's debut work, caused a huge stir after it was released in 1934 and became an unprecedented hit. It is evaluated as a representative hard-boiled novel that depicts the lust and greed behind American society full of contradictions from a cold perspective. Albert Camus also revealed that he was inspired by this novel to write his debut and representative work, 『The Stranger』 (1942).

A masterpiece that vividly depicts the dark side of American society.

The best novel that opened the door to the ‘noir novel’ genre

James M. Cain graduated from the University of Washington at the young age of 18 and entered World War II in 1918. After spending five years on the battlefield, he returned home and taught for a while, but soon began working as a journalist in New York. During this period, the ‘Lost Generation’ generation, led by Hemingway, was active. This was a generation that returned from war and lost cultural and emotional stability and even their values due to the rapidly changing social situation. Kane was also a member of this generation.

The main character of the novel, Frank, is a wanderer with nowhere to go, and penniless, he goes into a small eatery on the side of the highway and orders food without any plan. The owner, Nick, says he needs some help and asks him to work at the restaurant. Frank hesitates for a moment, but when he sees the young and attractive hostess Cora, he accepts the offer. Frank and Cora, attracted to each other at first sight, enjoy a tryst while avoiding Nick's eyes. Cora regretted marrying Nick, who was much older than her, without affection, and was bored with her boring life. As they grow tired of having to watch over Nick, the two devise a plan to get rid of Nick so as not to be disturbed. However, the plan fails, and Nick barely escapes with his life. Frank and Cora, unable to let go of their regrets, make a more elaborate and bold plan, and the three go on a trip together.

When this book was first published in 1934, its sale was banned in Boston because it contained many scenes of violence and sexuality. This novel, written as if it were a tabloid article, devoid of any emotion, opened the door to the ‘noir novel’ genre. For that reason, Kane is sometimes called “the poet of tabloid murder.” 『The Postman Rings Twice』 is a novel with a strange charm that makes you shudder at the heartless reality, but at the same time makes you feel the romantic emotion of trying to escape from reality.

French existentialist novelist Albert Camus revealed that he was inspired by 『The Postman Rings Twice』 to write his masterpiece 『The Stranger』. As such, Kane was an important American writer in France and Europe.
