FROM THE KOREAN PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION
A delightful ode to Barcelona by Eduardo Mendoza, a master of Spanish literature.
The Earth exploration log of an alien struggling to find his missing colleague Gurv.
A novel that humorously satirizes big city life by adding ingenious imagination to traditional Spanish narratives.
『Gurve No Contact』 by Eduardo Mendoza, a world-renowned writer who leads modern Spanish literature, was published in the Minumsa Collection of World Literature (290). 『Gurv No Contact』 is a unique novel with an alien who came to Earth as the main character. By adding parody techniques and science fiction elements to the traditional narrative structure, it humorously depicts the chaos and disorder of the metropolitan city of Barcelona and the life of city dwellers. In this work, Mendoza uses a light and cheerful tone throughout, lightly mocking the absurd and ridiculous aspects of his hometown Barcelona, which was about to host the Olympics at the time, while also carefully examining Barcelona's landmarks, famous people, and historical events through the eyes of an alien filled with wonder. It was first serialized in Spain's largest daily newspaper, El Pais, and attracted the attention of critics.
■ A diary of a strange alien's exploration of the strange Earth, until the infinitely unfamiliar Earth becomes infinitely friendly.
A year or two before the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, two aliens land in Spain. They attempt to explore life forms on Earth by using their ability to freely change their appearance. ‘I’ entrust the exploration of the area around the landing site to my colleague Gurb, but after Gurb disguised himself as the famous Spanish female singer Marta Sánchez and set out on the expedition, all contact was lost. ‘I’, left alone, wanders around Barcelona, taking on the appearance of famous people, in order to find Gourbe. ‘I’, who was wandering around the complex metropolis looking for Gurv, encountered problems with the spaceship he was using as a residence, so he bought an apartment with money he had saved by manipulating his bank account, and began living on Earth in earnest while waiting for Gurv to contact him. He builds friendships with the couple who owns his favorite restaurant and the apartment janitor.
『Gurve No Contact』 is, as Mendoza himself says, a very “unusual” novel. The main character is an alien who changes his appearance at will, and he writes down everything he sees, hears, experiences, and feels in an unfamiliar Earth and an unfamiliar big city, as if writing a diary every hour of the day (even when he is drunk). In addition to the fun of the science fiction-like setting, such as aliens transforming into movie stars, the Pope, or animals, shedding tears like Earthlings, then their bodies shrinking, or their heads explode due to heat, the sentences written in the present tense, written every hour, give you a sense of realism and speed as if you are traveling to Barcelona with aliens right now.
■ A delightful satirical novel combining Spanish narrative tradition, ingenious imagination, and a feast of humor.
『No Contact with Gurv』 was serialized in 《El Pais》 in the summer of 1990 and published as a book the following year. The setting of ‘An Alien Diary’ is quite unconventional and original for a novel published in the early 1990s. However, this alien speaker is not something completely unfamiliar and new. Doesn't it remind you of Cervantes' 『Don Quixote』, an adventurer who loves alcohol and women and constantly gets into trouble wherever he goes? In his previous works, Mendoza has consistently parodied the characters and composition of the picaresque novel, a traditional Spanish literary style.
