Book Description

Eugenidis’ representative work has been described as “the best young novelist in America today” (The New Yorker).

Based on a true story, this work deals with the memories of the baby boomers of the 1970s and their conflict with the older generation.

“That morning it was the turn of the last daughter left in the Lisven family to commit suicide.

This time it was Mary, and she swallowed the sleeping pills like Tully.”

■ Twenty years ago, a strange incident occurred in an ordinary village.

The first full-length novel, “The Virgin Suicide,” by Jeffrey Eugenidis, who has been described as “the best young novelist in America today” (The New Yorker), has been published in the Minumsa World Literature Collection. Geoffrey Eugenidis deftly unfolds the novel with a shocking and tragic ending in which the teenage girls of Lisbourg Street, at a time when they were in their prime, all five sisters commit suicide, moving freely between the time of the incident, twenty years ago, and the present. Eugenidis not only vividly revived the culture of the 1970s, which is the background of the novel, that is, the culture of the ‘baby boomer generation’, in his work, but also quietly pointed out the conflict with the older generation inherent in it, creating another problematic coming-of-age novel following 『The Catcher in the Rye』 and 『Damian』.

The reason why this work, which deals with a suicide case that occurred in a family, became such a hot topic can be attributed to the unique storytelling skills of Eugenidis, who is considered to have “an innate talent for turning the ordinary into something special” (New York Times Book Review). In this work, Eugenidis tells the story by alternating between the time of the incident, twenty years ago, and the present. For this reason, even though he is clearly middle-aged at the present time, the speaker's tone when talking about the past reveals the immaturity and confusion of a teenager, as if he had returned to the time of the incident. Because the teenage boys used as narrators are observers, they have no choice but to acquire limited information, and their credibility as observers is significantly reduced due to their young age and lack of objectivity due to their feelings toward the Lisburn sisters.

■ Why did they commit suicide? - Rumors gathered one by one through the eyes of ‘boys’

The narrators of this work are an unspecified number of neighborhood boys referred to simply as “us. ” These boys, who like to meddle in other people's affairs and are sexually curious, each have deep feelings for the Lisburn sisters. The story begins as adults begin an investigation to find out the reason for the Lisburn sisters' suicide, but each person has no choice but to find various perspectives on the truth, none of which can be said to be accurate. Eugenidis clearly shows the difference in the perspectives of the older generation represented by ‘parents’, the mass media, and the boys, without telling us the reason why it is ‘like this’, leading the reader to uncover the reason in his or her own way. The thoughts of the older generation can be briefly summarized as follows. “Parents thought it was due to moral hazard related to the music we listen to, atheism, or sex we haven’t had yet.
