FROM THE KOREAN PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION
Nobel Prize in Literature, Pulitzer Prize-winning author
Ernest Hemingway, a writer who pioneered 20th-century American literature
American novelist Ernest Hemingway, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature (1954),'s representative works, 『The Old Man and the Sea』, 『A Farewell to Arms』, and 『The Sun Also Rises』 were published in Minumsa's collection of world literature. Hemingway, known as a pioneer of modern American literature, is a writer who represents the ‘lost generation’ (une g? n? ration perdue, lost generation) who lost their coordinates of life after World War I. However, due to difficulties in obtaining a copyright contract, it was not properly introduced in Korea, but this time, three representative works were released simultaneously.
This is also the result of the preparations over the past three years by Professor Kim Wook-dong (Hankook University of Foreign Studies, Department of English Interpretation and Translation), an English literature scholar and translator. Hemingway once said that his work is “like an iceberg floating on the sea, with only one-eighth of the part floating on the surface of the water and the remaining seven-eighths sinking below the surface. ” Professor Wook-dong Kim has been translating since 2009 and has focused on preserving these stylistic characteristics. We considered each of Hemingway's sentences, which hide various meanings in concise expressions called 'hardboiled style', from various angles and tried to translate them so that Korean readers could easily understand them while maximizing the tone.
The story of a young man who realizes the true meaning of life and love amidst the futility of war.
A masterpiece that goes beyond the limitations of war novels and romance novels and contains deep insight into existence.
Frederick Henry, a young American who was studying architecture in Rome, Italy, was sent to the Italian front as an officer in an ambulance unit when World War I broke out. Frederick, who lived a life unrelated to actual combat, gets to know Catherine Barkley, a nurse from England. He initially meets Catherine in a lighthearted way, saying it is better than meeting a woman at a comfort station. Then, he is injured and is admitted to a rear hospital in Milan, where he is cared for by Catherine, and their love rapidly deepens. Frederick had planned to go on a three-week recuperation vacation with Catherine, who was pregnant with his child, but the head nurse, who had always disapproved of him, discovered his weakness and was sent back to the front line.
As a representative war novel, 『A Farewell to Arms』 describes in detail and realistically the contrasting situations between the battlefield and the rear, as well as the different thoughts of people fighting the war, and cynicism and criticism about war are deeply embedded throughout the work.
