Peter Handke, a master of experimental writing,'s early play "Insulting the Audience" received an enthusiastic response from audiences when it was first performed in 1966 and is still widely performed to this day. Handke, who emerged in the 1960s sharply criticizing the stagnant German literary world, gained fame by demonstrating the possibility of completely new and original literature through “Insulting the Audience. ” In “Insulting the Audience,” Handke overturns elements of traditional theater such as the unity of time, place, and action, as well as empathy and catharsis, and experiments with the possibilities of language itself, separated from content and form. In particular, the final part, which ridicules and satirizes the falsehood and hypocrisy of modern society by hurling all kinds of abusive language at the audience, can be said to be the climax of this work.
▶ A play that is not a play with no plot or events
The only characters on stage are four actors, and there is no plot or incident that leads the play. Actors speak directly to the audience, and the boundaries between actors and audience, stage and audience, theater and reality disappear. In the end, the actors called the audience “you guys” instead of “you guys” and hurled harsh insults at them. Can this really be called a play? In “Insulting the Audience,” the actors say this.
You won't hear anything here that you haven't heard before. You won't see anything here that you haven't already seen. What you always see when you come to the theater here, you will never see here. What you always hear when you come to the theater here, you won't hear here at all. (Page 17)
This is not a play. Here, events that have already happened are not repeated. There is only here and now. There is only the present. It only happens once. (Page 32)
The expectations of the audience who came to the theater to see the play are inevitably dashed, and the harsh words, “This is not a play,” continue to make the audience feel uncomfortable. Usually, in plays, actors on stage reenact certain events or play roles, and the audience watches quietly. The audience perceives the time and space of the play as separate from the real world, and when watching a play, they treat the world on stage as if it were the real world and become immersed in the events and characters in the play. Concepts such as empathy and catharsis, which have defined Western theater since ancient Greece, are premised on this very situation.
However, in “Insulting the Audience,” the audience and the actor exist at the same time and place, and there is no event that moves the audience.
