Marguerite Duras, Goncourt Prize-winning author and master of modern French literature
A beautiful language-video work completed in collaboration with director Alain Resnais.
Marguerite Duras is a writer who won the Goncourt Prize for her unique writing style and writing style, and who gained both public popularity and favorable reviews from French critics for the original works of films such as 『The Lover』 and 『Moderato Cantabile』. Also, in her later years, Marguerite Duras became a hot topic for her passionate love affair with Jan, a young man 35 years her junior. The screenplay 『Hiroshima My Love』, which she wrote in 1959, was published as No. 349 of the Minumsa World Literature Collection.
In 1958, Duras began working on a screenplay for a film set in ‘Hiroshima’ at the suggestion of Alain Resnais, a leading French New Vague film director. In this work, which fully reveals Duras' unique writing style, such as the recitative tone, unique rhythm of sentences, and complex inner feelings overlaid on simple images, what Duras depicts is the tragic memory of a French woman drawn in parallel with the image of the space called Hiroshima, where the atomic bomb was dropped.
The screenplay for the film “Hiroshima My Love,” in which Duras' voice was vividly projected, was published in 1960, the year after the film's release. It includes all the lines and passages that were omitted from the movie, and following the scenario, an appendix, memorandum, and portraits of the main characters are added. This book is a screenplay that serves as the basis for a movie, but is also a mixture of several genres of writing, including novel elements. Resnais and Duras created a ripple in the viewer's mind by adding a poetic narration in a dry, recitative voice over the devastating images of the aftermath of the atomic bombing, and cross-editing images of the past and present, peaceful landscapes and ruins. A novelist who insisted on writing that went beyond the norms of the time and a film director who was a leader in new visual aesthetics met to create a beautiful work containing poetic images and dialogue.
