Cesar Aira is considered a ‘writer’s writer’ who symbolizes the Post-Boom generation in Latin America and a master of experimental and original techniques, enough to be called the “Marcel Duchamp of modern literature” (New York Times). In addition, Ira has worked as a novelist, essayist, and translator, and has built a world of more than 100 works based on his incredible writing skills, consistently publishing one or two books every year. In the 1920s, in Colon, Panama, where there was chaos surrounding the construction of a canal connecting the two oceans, Baramo, a civil servant who lived a dull life caring for his single mother, ironically receives his salary in counterfeit bills. He is anxious to exchange counterfeit currency for ‘real’ currency in order to make a living, but it is not an easy task for him who is unfamiliar with the world except for stuffing small animals. Baramo tries to solve the counterfeit money problem within the bounds of the law as much as possible, but for some reason, he becomes embroiled in increasingly bizarre and huge incidents. Thus, the protagonist realizes that there is a conspiracy lurking beyond ordinary life and that there are forces seeking to overthrow Panama, which is virtually anarchic, and finally makes a great decision.
