“The truth is at the bottom of the well. If you look into the well, you will see the sun or moon reflected there. But if you throw yourself into it, the sun and moon will disappear.
Exploring the nature of power and corruption in the popular form of detective novels
Leonardo Sasha's representative work, author of Reason and Truth
A classic political novel that was the first to directly expose the true nature of the mafia in Italian literature.
Leonardo Sasha's masterpiece, 『The Owl's Day』, a representative writer of 20th century Italian literature and an active intellectual, was published in the Minumsa World Literature Collection. This work, published in 1961, was the first novel to seriously deal with the mafia problem, whose existence the Italian government at the time denied even its existence, and caused a huge social stir upon its publication. Shasha borrowed the format of ‘Romanzo Jalo’, which encompasses the concepts of crime novels and mystery novels, and persistently pursued not just the entire story of a murder case, but the social structure itself in which the truth is concealed and justice fails. 『The Owl's Day』 is the starting point of mafia narratives and a classic political novel that asks the question, "Why does justice fail?" rather than "Who is the culprit?"
Captain Velodi, a military police officer from the north who investigates a murder case that occurred in a small town in Sicily, approaches the truth of the case with a firm belief in law and reason. However, what he encounters is not a simple criminal organization, but a huge web of power created by silence, fear, interests, and political collusion. There are witnesses but no testimony, everyone sees but no one speaks. ‘Omerta’, the precept of silence, which has deeply permeated Sicilian society, is a barrier to the truth and the mafia’s most powerful weapon. Sasha does not simplify this silence into personal cowardice.
Leonardo Sasha, a writer who represented reason and truth
Leonardo Sasha was born in 1921 in Laccalmuto, Sicily, southern Italy. At teacher's school, he met his teacher, Vitaliano Brancati, who led him down the path of literature. After graduation, he worked at an agricultural cooperative and witnessed poverty and inequality in rural Sicily up close. Afterwards, he began writing while working as an elementary school teacher, and entered the writer's path with 『The Fable of Dictatorship』, and received attention by keenly revealing the historical and social reality of Sicily through 『Diocese of Regalpetra』, written based on his experience as a teacher in his hometown.
For Sasha, Sicily was not just a hometown or a backdrop for her work. It was a microcosm of reality where power, inequality, silence, and corruption were condensed. He believed that understanding Sicily meant understanding the world. Even after 『The Owl's Day』, he persistently dug into the collusion between the mafia and power, and the structure of corruption that contaminates national politics, through works that varied the format, such as 『To Each One's Part』 and 『Todo Modo』. Additionally, while working as a member of the House of Representatives, he did not let go of the issues of justice and truth that his literature aimed at, even in the realm of real politics. To Sicilians and Italians, Sasha is remembered as a writer who represented reason and truth, and as a moral intellectual who reminded us that corruption is not an immutable condition for governance.
