FROM THE KOREAN PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION
Reflections on the collective madness and ideology that swept Europe in the 20th century
In an era of loss of humanity, who is the ‘last man’ and how should we live?
“It’s them. They look happy. They seem to like the shape of a rhinoceros. Not at all.”
They don't look like crazy people. It looks very natural. “They were right.”
▶ Ionesco encompasses the most important themes of blind obedience, totalitarianism, despair, and death through this shocking play. ─《New York Times》
The masterpiece of Eugene Ionesco, a pioneer of modern absurdist theater, 『The Rhinoceros』 was published in the Minumsa Collection of World Literature. Born in 1909 to a Romanian father and French mother, Ionesco grew up witnessing the madness of Nazism firsthand in the midst of a brutal world war. 『Rhino』 was written against this background, and compared the process of falling into a group ideology to turning into a ‘rhino’, symbolizing it as a visible fear. Since its first performance at the Schauspielhaus in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1959, this work has been a huge success around the world and is considered to have opened a new horizon for modern theater.
■ One day, a rhino suddenly appeared
A square in a small local town. While people gathered in small groups leisurely enjoying the weekend, the howl of a beast suddenly rings out. The one that appeared with heavy breathing was none other than a rhino. As a large rhino charges towards people at full speed, the square instantly becomes chaos. ‘Is what we saw really a rhino?’ ‘How many in total?’ ‘What species is it?’ After the rhino disappears, people debate the identity of what they just saw, but it is not enough to allay the extreme anxiety.
In extreme fear, people who fail to identify the rhino focus on a cat that was trampled by the rhino. A housewife's beloved cat died in an uproar. People who felt that they could not handle this sadness with any logical explanation finally spoke with one voice, saying, ‘We cannot allow the cat to die.’ If you can't allow it, what are you going to do from now on? People disperse, leaving out this last question.
