Literature on the Road, William S. Burroughs, a representative writer of the Beat Generation
Written by digging into and dissecting one's own consciousness
A story of loneliness and longing
『Queer』, the second full-length novel by William S. Burroughs, a writer who represents the Beat generation literature of the 1950s along with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, was published by Minumsa as a collection of world literature. The Beat Generation, a bohemian literary and artistic group that emerged in San Francisco and New York in the mid-1950s after World War II, left a deep impact on the hippie generation that would emerge in the 1960s and on the exploration of American ‘subculture’ that would continue thereafter.
■ The United States, a powerful empire that became the victor in World War II,
Confront those hypocritical values and ethics
William S. Burroughs was born into a wealthy family, and after graduating from Harvard University in 1936, he wandered Europe and worked various jobs, including private investigator, exterminator, bartender, and newspaper reporter. As he begins living in New York, he begins to fall into a life of extreme pursuit of self-destructive freedom along with Kerouac and Ginsberg. In the 1950s, when the United States emerged victorious in World War II, it was a confident empire. It was as if the entire nation was on the highway to wealth, and everyone was forced to live a healthy middle-class life. In response to these hypocritical values, Beat Generation writers explored the subcultural world of New York's back alleys, indulging in drugs and alcohol, interacting with musicians, and visiting clubs where homosexuals gathered.
