Balzac's 『The Glory and Misery of Society』 (2 volumes) was translated for the first time in Korea and published in the Minumsa Collection of World Literature. 『The Glory and Misery of the Social World』, which began in 1835 when 『Inspired Goriot』 was published and was published in 1847, 3 years before Balzac's death, is a life's work that has always been on the author's desk from the beginning of the 『Human Drama』 worldview. Vautrin, a criminal who leaves a strong impression with his ‘masterful speech for villains’ in 『Guriot Goriot』, and Lucien, a beautiful young man who tantalizes readers with hope and anger in 『Lost Illusions』. 『The Glory and Misery of Society』, which shows the process by which two people, a wonderful collusion of evil and beauty, shake up the Parisian social world and play with the French judicial system, completes the finale of a vast narrative by weaving together 273 characters and over 50 previous works.
■ The first Korean translation of Balzac’s masterpiece from his later years, 『The Glory and Misery of Society』
Balzac's later work, 『The Glory and Misery of Society』, which had never been translated since it was introduced to Korea, was published in translation by Professor Lee Cheol-eui, a Balzac expert. Even among French literature majors, translation of Balzac's works is notoriously difficult, and this is not only because of Balzac's unique complex language. The worldview of Balzac's 『Human Drama』, which starts from 『Animator Goriot』, expands infinitely through a narrative technique called 'character reappearance technique', which was very innovative at the time. The protagonist of one work reappears repeatedly in other works, even as a significant supporting character, story teller, meaningful advisor, or passing role. In other words, the characters' numerous life stories are spread out throughout the 91 works, from early childhood through youth, middle age, and death.
Among them, the Korean version of 『The Glory and Misery of Society』, which was completed in 1847, three years before the author's death, will be a work that Balzac lovers have been waiting for for a long time. This is because the story of Vautrin, a criminal who disappeared after leaving a strong impression with his ‘masterful speech for villains’ in 『Inspiring Goriot』 (1835), and Lucien, a beautiful young man who continuously tantalized readers with hope and anger in 『Lost Illusion』 (1843), finally reaches its final conclusion in this work.
■ A full-fledged social novel that explores the ‘world of prostitution’ in 19th-century Paris.
Until this translation, 『Splendeurs et miseres des courtisanes』 was mainly known under the title ‘The Glory and Misery of Whores’. ‘Courtisanes’ in 19th century French literature has usually been translated as ‘women of the art world’ or ‘high-class prostitutes’. However, professional prostitutes are not the only ones selling ‘themselves’ for money in this work. From the highest aristocrats to the criminals at the bottom of society, everyone puts their ego on the line without hesitation to get something they want.
In an era where old-fashioned values have collapsed and the new ‘absolute code’ of capitalism has come to dominate the life, death, fortune and misfortune of all humans, there is nothing that cannot be sold for money. The work that clearly describes the current state of this ‘world of prostitution’ is 『The Glory and Misery of the Social World』, and therefore, instead of the biased word ‘prostitute’, the translator chose ‘Social World’ as the title, as it can better reveal the essence of the work.
