FROM THE KOREAN PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION
A one-day ‘poetic play’ that exposes the contradictions and entangled desires of China’s feudal society.
The representative work of Cao Yu, the founder of modern Chinese drama and known as China's Ibsen.
A drama of stark contradictions and tragic desires of the feudal era unfolding in a family's living room.
▶ What I wrote was a poem. -Chaoyu
Cao Yu is compared to Henrik Ibsen, the author of A Doll's House, and is called the founder of Chinese modern drama. 『Thunderstorm』, considered his representative work, was published in Minumsa's Complete World Literature (344). This work focuses on the conflict between the Jo and Lu families in the 1920s, exposing the sins that occurred under the feudal social order and patriarchal family system of the time and depicting its destruction.
On a sweltering summer day in China in the 1920s, a secret shadow that will change everyone's fate falls in the living room of the home of Mr. Zhou, a large landowner. Zhou Fuyuan, a large landowner, was a capitalist who made a huge fortune and lived a somewhat strict but respected father. However, due to the somewhat strange attitude of his young wife, Jo Woo-pan, and a series of events that remind him of the mistakes of his youth, he is the first to have a premonition that his fate will take a turn.
Meanwhile, the eldest son, Zhou Ping, falls in love with the maid Lu Sifeng, but the obstacle to their love is not only the social class gap. This is because the feelings of his stepmother, Zhou Panyi, who dissuades Zhou Ping, are not rejection based on social status, but jealousy. However, fate begins with knots tied in the past rather than coming from the future, and the tangled relationship between Zhou Fanyi, Zhou Ping, and Lu Sifeng is pushed to a sad extreme when another secret incident from their parents' generation is revealed. In a pouring thunderstorm, the hidden desires and sins of feudal society drive young people who long for a new era into agony.
『Thunderstorm』 is a four-act play that dramatizes and expresses the contradictions of the feudal society at the time in the short temporal setting of a day and the limited spatial setting of the living room. This work drew a strong response from Chinese society at the time through the fierce narratives of those who sought to discover their true selves in an absurd society and those who sought to defend themselves. This work transcends generations and times, and even today, it is still loved as an attractive work, being reinterpreted in various genres as well as literature and theater, such as being adapted and made into a film through director Zhang Yimou's film “The Empress.” In Korea, it has been performed several times by the National Theater Company since its premiere in 1946, and is a work that caused a great stir.
